While traveling along Interstate 40 in Cocke County, Tennessee, the car suddenly left the road and slammed into the guardrail and ran through it. The car then apparently went airborne over a two-lane road that runs alongside Interstate 40. When the car came down, it rolled an estimated four times.
The man and his 5-year-old daughter were ejected from the car. The driver’s 4-year-old son was not ejected. Emergency personnel responded and declared the man dead on the scene. The 5-year-old child suffered critical injuries and emergency personnel airlifted the child to the hospital. Officials listed the boy in stable but guarded condition.
Officials stated that none of the occupants had seat belts or child restraint devices on at the time of the accident. One trooper stated that a seat belt or other restraint device may have prevented the driver’s death and may have significantly reduced the children’s injuries. Officials do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role, but think that the driver may have fallen asleep.
